Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids. Amino acids are, as it were, the building blocks for proteins.
There are about 500 amino acids, but only 20 are important to the human body.
12 non-essential amino acids
Just over half of those amino acids are non-essential. This means that the human body can in principle produce them itself.
These 12 non-essential amino acids are:
alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, histidine (essential during growth), serine, arginine, glutamine, glycine, proline, cysteine and tyrosine.
But of these 12 non-essential amino acids, there are actually 6 "semi-essential" amino acids. In principle, these 6 can be produced in the body, based on a different amino acid.
For example, glutamine and proline can be made from glutamic acid.
In certain circumstances, the need may be greater than the body's capacity to produce it, so that supplementation through the diet becomes necessary.
The 6 semi-essential amino acids are:
arginine, glutamine, glycine, histidine (essential during growth) proline, cysteine and tyrosine.
8 essential amino acids
In addition to 12 non-essential amino acids, there are also 8 essential amino acids.
These 8 must therefore be absorbed from the diet, because they cannot be produced by the body.
The 8 essential amino acids are:
phenylalanine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan.
BCAA is the umbrella name for 3 essential amino acids: isoleucine, leucine and valine.
These BCAAs account for 35% of the essential amino acids in muscle proteins.
Proteins contribute to the growth of muscle mass.
Proteins contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass.
Proteins contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.
